It has been a very busy semester-
My 2 practical papers are painting (my major) and something called contextual studio, which forms the bulk of our workload and in which we make work to respond to a given brief in whatever medium the work demands.
we were given 3 words, sex, politics and religion and asked to make work based on one of those words. that was the entire brief. so basically we could do anything as almost everything could be related back to one of those 3 words somehow. My first inclination was to go with sex, as it is an area of particular interest to me and ne I have made plenty of work around before now. But I decided to step out of my comfort zone here and focus on religion.. Having made that decision, i then needed to decide what it was about religion I wanted to focus on and how I wanted to express it- not the easiest task!! I decided to investigate the selective quotation from the old testament used by the christian fundamentalist right wing to justify their homophobic stance... and nearly bit off more than I could chew!!!!
to cut a long process short, ill skip showing images of the work I made during the investigative process, lets just say that during this 13 week brief, I filled a 120 page visual diary and then some.
some of the ideas included a bowl of sweets with selected bible passages on them so people could pick through to find their favorite flavor and a re-worked medicine bottle label as well as a series of photographic images that didnt come to much. In the end I built a small church out of glass, keeping in mind the idiom that 'people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones'.. and Ian did a beautiful job of braizing a wire church, which is the illusion of shelter only..
when i get the glass church back from being marked, it is going to make the greatest fish-tank.... :)
and this wire church will look lovely in the garden...
moving on to my painting brief, this semester, the emphasis was on shape, space and colour. again, I filled a whole work book, so I trialed many different ideas, focussing on repeated shapes and the 'push/pull' of negative space. the investigation of one single shape was interesting and worthwhile.. heres the outcome of the first half of semester..
basically, I dont think this is a very interesting work, and I kinda knew it wouldnt be before I even started, but I felt I had to make it anyway, as you dont really know unless you do it..
after this, i lost interest in my shape, and started working with some preformed little crosses I had laying about. I painted the tops and then got totally obsessed with stacking them...
much trial and error proceeded their final instillation which was on a grid ruled directly on the wall...
I was pretty happy with this work, and feel it was strong- so looking forward to my marks to see if my lecturers agree!!
